Everything You Need to Know to Choose the Right Seat
Hey there! I just got back from a high-speed train ride from Beijing to Shanghai, and I want to share my real seat experience with you to help you choose the right one next time without any hassle.
1. Basic Info of Different Classes
I took first class this time, and I’ve also ridden in second class and business class before. Let me break down the basic info for you to make a comparison:

2. Real Experience of Different Classes
1. Waiting and Boarding
Second class and first class are in the regular waiting hall, which is really crowded. Last time I took second class, I had to squeeze to find a seat, and I had to wait in line with the big crowd to board, carrying my luggage by myself.
But business class is different. It has a dedicated VIP waiting hall. Last time I took business class at Shanghai Hongqiao Station, there was no crowd as soon as I walked in. There were free coffee and snacks, and the staff helped me take my luggage directly to the carriage. Boarding was through a special channel, no need to queue, which was really convenient.
2. Inside the Carriage
- Second Class: The seats are made of hard fabric, and the backrest can’t be adjusted at all. When I was sitting, if the person in front of me suddenly stood up, my tray table would be bumped, which was really annoying. Plus, there are a lot of people in the carriage, so the noise is loud, and my back hurt after sitting for a while.
- First Class: The seats are soft, and the backrest can be adjusted from 5 to 32 degrees. There’s also a footrest, so I could put my feet up and feel much more comfortable. The tray table is foldable, so it won’t be affected by the person in front. The noise in the carriage is a bit quieter than in second class, and I didn’t feel as tired after sitting for a while.
- Business Class: The seats are made of genuine leather and can recline 180 degrees. Last time I took it, I stretched my legs out just like lying on a sofa. There were also pillows, lumbar pillows, and blankets. There was a display screen and a reading light on the armrest, which was really thoughtful. The carriage has carpet, so the noise control is very good, and the restroom is independent and much cleaner than the restrooms in other classes.
3. Additional Experience
- View: First class is at the front or back of the carriage, so the view is very open, and you can keep watching the scenery outside. Some seats in second class are blocked by the carriage structure, so the experience of watching the scenery is not as good.
- Privacy: Business class has independent space, and some models have compartments. Last time I took it, I felt like I had a whole carriage to myself. First class and second class are open, with people coming and going, so the privacy is not as good.
3. Seat Selection Tips
- If you’re on a short-distance trip of 2-3 hours, second class is enough, it’s the most cost-effective.
- If you’re on a medium to long-distance trip of more than 4 hours, I recommend first class. It strikes the perfect balance between comfort and price.
- If you’re on a high-end business trip or a long-distance trip and have a generous budget, business class is the best choice, it’s worth the experience.
- For special scenarios, couples can choose adjacent seats in first class; if you’re a family with a generous budget, business class will be more suitable.
